Kaleiçi occupies Antalya’s compact historic core, enclosed by remnants of city walls in central Muratpaşa. Narrow paved lanes tilt downhill from the modern city-centre side towards a small harbour sheltered beneath Mediterranean cliffs. Roman masonry, Byzantine and Seljuk structures, Ottoman houses and present-day cafés share the same tight street plan. Rooflines, stonework and glimpses into courtyards appear between the quarter’s best-known monuments.

Kaleiçi from the upper streets to the harbour

The land falls steadily from the busy avenues around the old quarter towards the water. Cobbled passages bend between houses, small squares and surviving sections of wall, sometimes narrowing before opening to a terrace or sea view. At the lower edge, the old harbour sits below the fortifications and now serves as a marina, where excursion boats and smaller vessels share the sheltered basin. Restaurants and cafés occupy parts of the waterfront and the streets immediately above it.

Roman gates and historic landmarks

Hadrian’s Gate marks a striking entrance from the eastern side. Built in AD 130 in honour of Emperor Hadrian, it has three arched openings and is largely made of white marble; the towers on either side contain work from different periods. Near the northern edge, the fluted Yivli Minaret provides a clear Seljuk-period landmark beside the clock-tower area.

Among the places worth seeing in Kaleiçi are the old walls, Kesik Minare, mosques, churches and museums housed in historic buildings. Hıdırlık Tower rises at the southern edge near Karaalioğlu Park, although its original date and purpose remain debated. These landmarks appear within a few compact streets, with the harbour and traditional houses between them.

Timber houses, sloping lanes and courtyards

Traditional houses generally rise two or three storeys above the lanes. Stone lower walls support timber elements, tiled roofs and projecting upper floors. Bay windows project over the lanes, and wooden shutters line the street-facing walls. Garden and courtyard sides often remain hidden behind those outer walls. Bougainvillea spills over some entrances, and shaded courtyards appear through open gateways. Pebble details underfoot or around thresholds add small-scale pattern to the stone and cobbles.

Marina life, Mermerli Beach and evenings

Kaleiçi old harbour and marina below the historic walls and red-tiled roofs in Antalya

Mermerli Beach occupies a small pocket beside the old harbour, directly below Mermerli Park. Its compact position beneath the historic core bears little resemblance to Antalya’s long coastal beach strips. The marina, beach, old walls and tiled roofs sit within a closely folded cliffside landscape.

Boutique hotels, pensions and guesthouses make up much of Kaleiçi’s accommodation. Many are small properties inside restored historic buildings rather than large all-inclusive complexes. After sunset, diners fill courtyards and terraces, and bars extend the evening around the lanes and harbour; some host live music. High summer is generally the hottest and busiest period, while spring and early autumn usually bring milder conditions.

Kaleiçi within central Antalya

Kaleiçi lies inside Muratpaşa, the wider district that covers Antalya’s central urban area. Its walls, harbour and closely packed historic buildings belong to that city-centre setting. Konyaaltı lies west of central Antalya, with a much longer pebble beach and a more open waterfront. The broad coast there forms a clear geographic contrast with Kaleiçi’s small harbour and enclosed lanes.
