Ölüdeniz is a coastal holiday area in Muğla’s Fethiye district, set where pine-covered foothills descend to a bright curve of shore. Although nearby Fethiye is the district’s main town, Ölüdeniz has a compact beachfront character of its own, framed by Babadağ and the sea.

Understanding the Ölüdeniz shoreline

Aerial view of Ölüdeniz Blue Lagoon and surrounding mountains

The familiar aerial view contains two distinct shores. From above, their curves appear connected, but their exposure and shoreline character are quite different. Kumburnu is the slender headland associated with the Blue Lagoon, separating its sheltered water from Belcekız Beach on the open sea. The lagoon side sits within the protected Ölüdeniz–Kıdrak nature-park landscape, with wooded slopes and generally calmer water close to shore.

Belcekız Beach faces the wider sea and feels more exposed. Waves can be livelier and the water may deepen more quickly than beside the lagoon, although conditions on both sides vary from day to day. Together, the two shores form Ölüdeniz’s familiar coastline: a protected lagoon behind Kumburnu and a more exposed beach facing the open sea.

Babadağ above Ölüdeniz

Babadağ rises directly behind the resort, giving the waterfront its steep mountain backdrop. Colourful paragliders launch from its slopes and descend towards the landing area by Belcekız Beach, so the movement between summit and sea is part of the everyday view. The cable-car connection has also made the mountain a scenic destination for people who prefer to take in the coast from above.

Beyond the Blue Lagoon

South of Ölüdeniz, the coastline becomes rugged around Faralya and Uzunyurt. Butterfly Valley lies between very high rock walls and is widely associated with boat trips from Ölüdeniz; seen from the water, its narrow beach and sheer-sided setting are the main impression. Kıdrak is another pine-backed bay within the protected coastal landscape.

Aerial view of the abandoned stone village of Kayaköy

Inland, Kayaköy preserves abandoned stone houses, churches and chapels on a dry hillside. Its present form is connected to the population exchange and the settlement’s later abandonment; the empty buildings remain evidence of displacement and a once-established community. The Lycian Way begins around Ovacık, where the long-distance trail meets the Babadağ foothills above the coast.

Beachfront, Ovacık and Hisarönü

The name Ölüdeniz is often used for a holiday area that stretches well beyond the water’s edge. Beachfront Ölüdeniz and Belcekız place the shore, promenade and landing paragliders at the centre of the scene. Ovacık and Hisarönü sit higher on the Babadağ foothills, where the air and outlook feel more upland than seaside.

Hisarönü is generally the livelier of the two after dark, with a denser cluster of restaurants and evening venues. Ovacık is more spread out, with smaller hotels, apartments and villas woven between local roads and mountain views. These areas share the same coastal hinterland but have noticeably different rhythms.

Seasons on the coast

High summer is hot and busy, with the beaches and resort streets at their fullest. Late spring and early autumn are generally milder, bringing less intense heat to the beaches and mountain foothills, though weather, sea conditions and seasonal services always vary. Conditions may differ between elevated Babadağ, the open Belcekız shore and the more sheltered water around the lagoon.

Dalaman Airport to Ölüdeniz

A private Dalaman Airport–Ölüdeniz transfer connects the airport with the visitor’s accommodation. The route page brings together the live vehicle options and booking information for this connection. Travellers can arrange the journey from the airport to their accommodation before they arrive.

Frequently asked questions

Kumburnu separates the sheltered Blue Lagoon from Belcekız Beach, which faces the open sea. Water near the lagoon is often calmer, while Belcekız can have more wave movement and deepen more quickly, although conditions vary.

Many families use both shores, with the sheltered lagoon often preferred for gentler water near the beach. Belcekız is more exposed to the open sea, and neither shore should be assumed to have permanently calm conditions.

Ölüdeniz is a coastal holiday area within Fethiye district in Muğla Province. Fethiye is the wider district centre, while Ölüdeniz has its own beachfront resort setting.

Paragliders launch from Babadağ’s slopes and descend towards the landing area beside Belcekız Beach. The mountain’s position directly behind the coast makes the flights a defining part of the Ölüdeniz skyline.

Butterfly Valley is known for its narrow beach beneath high rock walls, while Kıdrak adds another pine-backed bay to the coast. Inland, Kayaköy’s abandoned stone houses and churches preserve the difficult history of a community shaped by population exchange.
